What is AI? And why is it used everywhere? What is it about its popularity?
If one has asked me this question earlier I will probably say that it is nothing, it’s just a tool for helping the human kind, it is not reliable, it produces false content. But now that I have worked on it and seen the results, efficiency and deliverables of AI, I am here to speak nothing but only positive things about the same.
Well artificial intelligence is described as a tool or machine that replicates human intelligence, this notion is popularized by the founding father of this discipline Mr. John Mc Carthy. Like the other things AI has undergone several changes is now conceived as a computer system that is similar to human kind in numerous ways.
“AI is a tool. The choice about how it gets deployed is ours”. -Oren Etzioni
Not to our surprise ai has undertaken all the fields in the world from robotics, finance, machine learning, video game to mental health. Ai chatbots are something that are delivering across the world helping the people with their mental health issues as an easily accessible tool providing help to everyone at just one click. From removing the feelings of isolation, loneliness, anxiety and providing immediate virtual company to people under distress.
There has been immense work done on applicability of ai in mental health stating its effectiveness and usage by the users this blog identifies the issues, challenges and usage of ai from a clinician’s perspective. The mental health professionals are expected to deliver a 45-60 minute session, fill up the session notes, summarize the session, make a treatment plan or formulate an intervention plan, prepare for the next session, take case history formulate and keep the record of the same simultaneously while attending their sessions. Obviously this process exerts a great amount of stress and pressure on the mental health professionals.
Various challenges mental health professionals face with regard to the sessions.
- Burden of documentation- An equally important though occasionally overlooked due to immense work pressure is creating accurate patient records and fostering good communication among healthcare practitioners. Patient documentation and efficient provider-to-provider communication. On the other hand, it can put additional pressure on physicians’ already full schedules and cause them to work longer hours than necessary for patient care.
- Work life balance- Due to the requirements of documentation and extended work hours, mental health practitioners frequently struggle with important work-life balance issues. The administrative load of recording sessions, treatment plans, and assessments can be daunting, even if their main priority is to provide clients with compassionate care. When paired with the requirement for longer workdays to fulfill administrative and client obligations, this can result in emotional drain and burnout.
- Personal mental health under question- Mental health professionals, despite their expertise in supporting others, often face their own personal mental health challenges. The nature of their work exposes them to the emotional struggles and traumas of their clients, which can take a toll on their own well-being. Additionally, the pressure to maintain a facade of competence and strength can create a barrier to seeking help for their own mental health concerns. Moreover, the demanding nature of the profession, including long hours, high caseloads, and the responsibility of managing crises, can contribute to feelings of burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.
- Increasing amount of expectations- a clinician is regarded as someone who should be on point with their client’s details, problems, documents, concerns providing sessions on time to maintain their records. Although it is crucial for a clinician to do so for several reasons like to follow ethics, legal measures, future psychiatric interventions etc. but this has led the clinical psychologists, counselors and other mental health professionals in a never ending cycle of work. It is seen that a clinical psychologist works for about 10-14 hours a day whereas an average person should spend only 6-8 hours at work.
- Burnout- this leads to the physical and psychological burnout amongst the mental health professionals. As everything doing manually becomes difficult. Which causes symptoms of burnout, stress, anxiety for the mental health professionals. According to a report by the American Psychological Association (APA), psychologists frequently work beyond the standard 40-hour workweek, with some studies suggesting that the average psychologist works between 40 to 60 hours per week in America.
Hence, AI interventions like chat bots, note taker AI can be some helpful tools under the toolkit of a psychologist, psychiatrist, mental health professional which will help them maintain their work life balance, personal well-being and mental health.
“In the long term artificial intelligence and automation are going to take over so much of what gives humans a feeling of purpose”.
How AI note takers can help mental health professionals
From the pages of Arthur C. Clarke, artificial intelligence has emerged, and it has steadily improved and become a more dependable reality. It could hardly be more dramatic if you asked George Lucas to write it: one revolution in AI sparks another revolution in medical documentation. Presenting note-taking tools driven by AI! Automation has gained prominence thanks to AI technology, which has drastically altered how healthcare providers approach documentation.
The medical note takers or clinician note takers can work as a handy tool to provide efficient results. What exactly is a note taker? It is a tool used by clinicians to write patient notes, session summaries, paraphrasing the recordings and giving detailed case formulations, treatment plan etc. it is a helpful tool for the clinicians.
- Increased accuracy- Artificial intelligence (AI) note-taking apps use sophisticated algorithms and natural language processing (NLP) to transcribe and interpret spoken words into organized, accurate medical notes; they resemble a doctor’s assistant in terms of listening, but not in terms of committing human errors. This technology ensures a greater degree of accuracy in patient records by speeding up the documentation process and dramatically reducing errors.
- Easy accessibility- Another significant benefit of the AI Note Taker is accessibility. Usually saved in digital format, the notes made with this tool are readily available from any internet-connected device. This implies that you won’t have to go through pages and pages of handwritten notes in order to find the information you need. Moreover, using AI Note Taker makes real-time cooperation easier. All members of the team can access the same information by simply sharing the notes with other participants. This encourages improved communication and makes it possible for everyone to participate in conversations or meetings with more effectiveness.
- Decreased work pressure- Healthcare personnel are able to interact with patients more successfully during consultations as AI handles the majority of the note-taking. This leads to improved patient-doctor contact, more precise health assessments, and individualized patient care. As the documentation pressure decreases a professional can focus upon the clients better.
- Quality management- AI-powered systems are capable of more than just transcription; they can also effectively integrate, tag, and categorize data into electronic health records (EHRs). Healthcare professionals may more easily access and evaluate patient data with this degree of data management and structure, which helps them make better decisions based on more precise insights.
- Increased efficiency- Note-taking apps powered by AI have the potential to greatly improve clinic operations efficiency. These apps free up doctors’ time to spend more time interacting with patients and providing care, instead of taking notes. The apps enhance patient care quality and optimize clinical practice efficiency by freeing up doctors to spend more time interacting with patients rather than taking notes.
The AI note-taker enhances mental health professionals’ efficiency by offering auto-suggestions, auto-complete features, and a variety of tools to streamline their work. It supports, rather than replaces, therapists, helping to create case histories, treatment plans, intervention plans, and progress notes from session transcripts or recordings. Additionally, these apps prioritize safety, security, and privacy, with advanced features like demographic detail management, appointment scheduling, and progress tracking. For instance, Mentalyc excels in maintaining comprehensive client records and tracking progress, focusing on quality care.
